Key State Highlights

While Massachusetts ranks in the top states nationwide across measures of health care access and outcomes, Hispanic and American Indians/Alaska Native residents still suffer from substantial socioeconomic, environmental, and social inequities.

  • Hispanic individuals in Massachusetts have the fewest opportunities to own a home, have a livable income, attain post-secondary education, or have a dedicated healthcare provider. They also face greater community and safety factor challenges, as they are least likely to live in areas of low rates of physical assault, robbery, poverty, and liquor store density.
  • Despite Massachusetts’ top ranking for health outcomes, Black and American Indian/Alaska Native populations still face substantial inequities. Black populations experience higher rates of premature mortality and low birth weight in infants. Only 33% of American Indian/Alaska Native adults are in very good or excellent health, compared to the state rate of 56%.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native individuals in Massachusetts also face difficulty with affordable and quality housing and have the lowest rate of youth aged 16-24 in school or working.
  • Black residents in Massachusetts are less likely to live in areas with low rates of homicide and physical assault. Only 65% of Black populations live in low homicide areas compared to the state rate of 89%.
