Key State Highlights

Louisiana ranks in the bottom for most measures of opportunity among all populations, with the greatest challenges in health outcomes and health care access measures.

  • Whereas Asian/Pacific Islander and White populations generally perform well on measures of opportunity nationwide, in Louisiana, Asian/Pacific Islander individuals are less likely to live in areas with low homicide and robbery rates, and White individuals are less likely to live in areas of food security. Asian/Pacific Islander adults are also least likely to have a dedicated health care provider.
  • Black adults in Louisiana suffer from inequities in employment, income, and housing, and are less likely to live in areas of low crime and poverty. They are also more likely to experience higher rates of premature mortality and infant mortality, with black babies twice as likely to experience low birth weight as Hispanic babies.
  • American Indian/Alaskan Native adults in Louisiana report lower rates of very good or excellent health and are less likely to live in areas with adequate primary care and psychiatric care access. More so, only 38% of AI/ANs have attained post-secondary education, the lowest rate within the state.
  • Hispanic residents in Louisiana are less likely than other groups to have insurance coverage or be able to afford healthcare. They are also the least likely to own homes.
